Yemen’s geo-strategic location and its impact on Yemeni decision-making :An analytical study

Dr.. Mohamed Ahmed Musharrah
Senior researcher at the Yemeni Studies and Research Center, Sana’a, Yemen

This study aimed to identify Yemen’s geostrategic position in
international politics by first identifying the strategic importance of
Yemen’s geographical location at the level of international strategy
and policy, especially since the international system’s dealings
through different historical periods, as well as the behavior of other
international units, especially the major ones, towards Yemen was A
reflection of Yemen’s geographical location.
The study reached a number of results, the most important of
which are: that Yemen’s strategic location made it an arena for local
and international conflict, especially as it is located next to the
world’s oil sources in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, and
overlooks the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the most important water
crossing in the world. The weakness of the Yemeni economic and
military capabilities, and the weakness of national unity, have
negatively affected the national capacity of Yemen, and prevented its
control over its vast coasts, which facilitated the process of
penetration by foreign countries, and it needs huge capabilities to
tighten its control on the border and coastal strip, especially on the
other side. The military position, to ensure sovereignty and prevent
its penetration by land, sea and air, and the importance of the site for
international interests and strategy imposed international structural
restrictions on the Yemeni decision-maker, limiting his movement
and reducing the alternatives available to him in his behavior towards
major countries and some regional powers.
